The Redmond area was first settled by Europeans in the 1870s. A post office
was established in 1881 and the settlement’s official name became
Redmond in 1883. The city was incorporated in December of 1912.
Today, Redmond contains Washington’s only velodrome; it is also called
the “Bicycle Capital of the Northwest.” Its population numbers
54,144 in an area of nearly 17 square miles. Redmond is a popular community
and has undergone significant growth throughout the past several decades;
it is the home of several large industry headquarters, including the Microsoft
Corporation and Nintendo of America.
